How to Build An Active Social Life During Golden Years

Being a senior comes with it’s own sets of challenges. You may have lost your closest family members or friends or you may have moved to a new city. It could be that you may have a physical disability that prevents you to go out and enjoy. You may miss your work schedule from your earlier years, something that kept you busy back then. Whatever the reason, you can build a social life and enjoy spending time with other people. Here are a few tips that will help you get started to a more interesting and happier life.

Before expanding your social circle, here are some things to keep in mind.

  • Focus on your strengths and avoid negative thoughts.
  • Having a social life is fun and good for health.
  • Don’t be shy. Be open to having conversations with other people.

Senior Centers

Now-a-days each city has it’s own senior center. It’s a wonderful place to meet new people and spend time there. Most have activities planned on a weekly/monthly basis. You can pick the days that you would like to visit, according to your interests. They may have movie and meal days, game nights, guest speakers to create awareness about a certain topic etc. Some may offer free or discounted classes. Visit a senior center close to you and in no time you will be able to find others with similar interests and hobbies.

Surroundings

Take a look around your surroundings. Do you know your neighbors? Next time when you see a neighbor, go and say “hi”. Making new friends is the best way to increase your social circle. You may find that some people that you meet share similar interests and even if you don’t, you can still learn about them or may enjoy their company.

You may see familiar people in your local community. Talk to them or invite them for a cup of coffee. If the weather is nice, go some where and enjoy outdoors.

Technology

There are many apps today that let you connect with family, friends or acquaintances. Most popular one is facebook. You can connect with people you may no longer be in touch with. Use technology to keep in touch with family and friends.

Develop New or Existing Hobby

Now that you have time, you need to ask yourself that what your interests are? What is it that you have always wanted to do in life but never had the time to pursue earlier?

May be you could pursue photography or learn dancing. The latter will also be form of exercise and good for overall health. Try not to think of a hobby as a chore but something that enjoy doing. Along the way, you may be able to meet new people and make friends.

Volunteer

You can find volunteering opportunities from your local library. You can then select the opportunities according to your interests. It’s a great way to spend time and meet new people.
